Across Covid America - Tour of National Parks 2020 - Day 14

Day 14
14726 mileage
8:26 A.M.
6791 steps

Did you know that the Transcontinental Railroad was built from both the eastern and western directions and they met in a place called Promontory? We were an hour and a half drive away and after some begging and pleading, G agreed to drive out there. I was surprised when we passed by the Northrup Grumman Nuclear Testing site. A bleak looking chained off area.

We arrived in Promontory about 9:50 along with a few others. The visitor's center was closed to the public, but the gift shop had a table set out we could purchase things from. Magnets!

Talking to the rangers about where to get our Passport stamp, they mentioned that the train would be pulling into the station in ten minutes. Ooh, how perfect is that? G acted like he planned this all along, but serendipity definitely came into play this morning.

Did you know that the famous Golden Spike was only ceremoniously tapped at this site and then immediately taken to a museum? I didn't either.

I've always wanted to say that I've seen the Great Salt Lake, so we stopped in the northeastern section of it in Willard's Bay where tons of families were paying the heft $20 entrance fee to picnic and lay out on the small beach there.

Provo here we come.
